Domaine Sylvain Cathiard 2020

January 2022

Sébastien Cathiard continues to expand his range, and after the addition of a Gevrey-Chambertin as well as two single vineyard wines from the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits in 2019, he aims to add a third Hautes-Côtes de Nuits soon. He also has plans to expand his production of white wines too. In the 2020 vintage, he picked notably late, starting his harvest on the 8th September, at least a week after many had finished theirs. His decision was based on judging optimal phenolic ripeness and consequently his wines show a fruit density allied to notable vibrancy and mineral drive. These are wines of definition and great persistence.

2020 Côteaux Bourguignons, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£120 per 6 bottle case in bond

Forty-year-old vines, co-planted Gamay (40%) and Pinot Noir (60%), harvested together and co-fermented.

An appealing creamy touch allied to bright, freshly mashed ripe berry fruit on nose and palate. Crisp, fresh fruit palate with gentle grip at the end. Drink 2024-2028

2020 Bourgogne Rouge, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£180 per 6 bottle case in bond

Gently expressed red fruit on the nose. Juicy fruit quality on the palate with a subtle mineral balance. Drink 2024-2028

2020 Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, "Aux Chaumes", Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£225 per 6 bottle case in bond

Beautiful, scented aromatics here. Clean, pure, gently creamy. Juicy fruit touch towards the end but overridingly the persistence is mineral with the ripe, juicy fruit and more mouth-filling style yielding what the French would term a more ‘gourmand’ style. The Chaumes vineyard is next to the Dames Huguette but above it and on the plateau, though both share poor soils on free-draining limestone. Drink 2025-2033

2020 Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, "Les Dames Huguette", Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£225 per 6 bottle case in bond

Restrained on the nose showing pure red and blue fruit brightness. The ‘Les Dames Huguette’ vineyard is on the slope of the Hautes-Côtes on thin, white stone soils and this is reflected in the more linear, more tensile mineral nature. The finish is persistent and incredibly pure with such clean fruit length. Drink 2025-2033

2020 Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£360 per 6 bottle case in bond

Intensely ripe dark berry fruit – blackberry and black cherry notes. The palate shows power and fruit density underpinned by a tannic breadth and persistence showing the 40-year-old vine age and more clay-based origin of this wine, now in its second year as part of the Cathiard range. Drink 2027-2037

2020 Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£390 per 6 bottle case in bond

Even on the nose here there is somehow a sense of velvet in the creamy opulence of the pure ripe fruit. This comes through on the palate where, while there is an underlying mineral drive and energy, there is a caressing nature on the very persistent finish. As ever, a wonderfully accomplished Vosne villages. Drink 2027-2037

2020 Chambolle-Musigny, Clos de l'Orme, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£420 per 6 bottle case in bond

Cathiard’s Clos de l’Orme is explosively aromatic in 2020, perfumed and expressive with scented red fruit. The palate has a clean, flowing purity – all elegance and harmony. The tannins are present but gently expressed on a long, precise mineral finish with a cherry fruit lift at the very end. Drink 2027-2037

2020 Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru, Aux Thorey, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£780 per 6 bottle case in bond

Really deep, dark fruit on the nose here, incredible ripeness but not overripe. Black cherry compote and yet also scented and floral with cherry blossom notes. The palate is beautifully focused by mineral tannins, the vibrant fruit lifted by a tensile, white stone persistence. Drink 2028-2040

2020 Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru, Aux Murgers, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£840 per 6 bottle case in bond

Tight, closed, yet evidently concentrated nose. Murgers has a tendency to produce particularly small berries and this heightens this sense of concentration in the vintage. The palate shows a breadth and density and, while there is a stony mineral energy, the fruit richness comes through again at the end. Power and mineral drive at the end. Drink 2029-2042

2020 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Aux Reignots, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£1,500 per 6 bottle case in bond

Sébastien’s Reignots is notable for an ethereal quality to the fruit and an incredibly finessed palate which he attributes to the combination of sandy soils and the relatively young vines (24 years old on average). The palate shows the sucrosité element allied to a mineral freshness and a mouth-watering, saline touch which carries the subtle richness to the end of the palate. Drink 2028-2040

2020 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, En Orveaux, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£1,500 per 6 bottle case in bond

An aromatic nose of red and black fruit introduces an Orveaux of evident fruit ripeness and concentration. The palate has a creamy note to the dark cherry and raspberry fruit which show a great fluidity and harmony. The finish is of very fine white stone mineral length. Exceptionally pure, concentrated and focused, showing the full benefit of 70-year-old vines and this terroir. Drink 2029-2043

2020 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Les Suchots, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£1,900 per 6 bottle case in bond

The colour here is deeper and the nose is intense and concentrated. This translates to a palate of power and breadth with deep, juicy, ripe, dark berry fruit. There is a density and concentration to the tannins here which reflect the deeper soils in this lower-lying premier cru. Very well expressed and showing fine balance of intense fruit and powerful structure. Drink 2029-2043

2020 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, Aux Malconsorts, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£2,400 per 6 bottle case in bond

There is an immediate sense of richness here on the nose. While aromatically quite closed at present there is a sense of depth and of healthy ripe fruit. The controlled power is so evident and there is great length and energy here in a very special wine of supreme poise and persistence. Drink 2030-2045

2020 Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, Domaine Cathiard SOLD OUT

£3,000 per 3 bottle case in bond

A touch of creamy, toasty oak gives way to pure ripe fruit on the nose. This Romanée-St Vivant effortlessly combines depth and elegance with such finesse of tannins on a very long finish. So pure, elegant and gently persistent. Drink 2030-2045

As always with Burgundy releases, we are unable to sell leading Grand Cru and Premier Cru or wines from particularly sought-after domaines in isolation – we cannot buy them from the domaines that way ourselves and we are aware that demand is sure to outstrip supply. However, instead of running a complex system of allocations, we do aim to confirm requests as soon as we are able to do so or to highlight where we are unable to assist. To request a specific wine, please contact any member of the sales team on +44 (0) 20 3017 2299. You can also reach Simon Larkin MWRichard O'Mahony, and James Ceppi di Lecco by email.
