The UK rosé market is a fascinating one to observe – it has grown significantly over recent years with more ‘premium’ wines, or at least, ‘premium-priced’ wines emerging onto the market. As far as supermarket sales are concerned, rosé now accounts for 9% of all still wine purchased, according to AC Nielsen. Such growth has been driven by a number of brands, which enjoy strong customer loyalty.

In terms of fine wine, the rosé market is certainly dominated by French rosé and notably those pale-hued rosé from Provence, but the category is much more diverse than that, and, if you are prepared to venture away from the familiar, you can find great value and quality.

Each year, we look out for new rosés; wines with refreshing, bright acidity and a fine purity of fruit, as well as sufficient character that they easily invite a second glass. A couple of years ago we bought a parcel of a Sicilian rosé that really impressed us, and rapidly sold out. I am pleased to say we have just shipped the new vintage of Tenute Bosco’s Etna Rosato, which was a standout at a recent in-house tasting.

This organic rosé is made entirely from the indigenous Sicilian variety, Nerello Mascalese, which is capable of making interesting reds and distinctive rosés. It thrives when grown at altitude, notably on the northern slopes of Mount Etna on sandy and, unsurprisingly, volcanic soils. The fruit for Tenute Bosco’s impressive rosé is taken from a vineyard first planted in 1870 and just 10,000 bottles are produced each year via a gentle pressing of the skins of the Nerello Mascalese. Please see below for my tasting note.

Pale pink in hue, there is a zesty quality to the delicate, floral, nuanced stone fruit on the nose. The palate reveals a certain softness, with a moreish, vibrant fruit, and a silky texture. The tangy juiciness that this style captures signals an impressive rosé, with subtle hints of peach and nectarine melding with cherry and a little touch of spice. The finish reveals that slightly mineral, salty tang that leaves you reaching for another glass. An impressive rosé that possesses a little more depth than you expect, and leads to a positive, mouth-watering finish. Impeccably made. (SL). Drink 2023-2025.

The wine has just landed in our cellars, and is ready for despatch this week, in time for what we are told is going to be the warmest week of the year so far!
