Domaine Morey-Coffinet 2021

January 2023

Thibault Morey reports having lost 70% of his crop in 2021 and the wines are available in tiny quantities. The domaine continues its upward trajectory with the 2021s from Morey-Coffinet an evident success

In bottle. Pale colour and a lean tight nose but suggesting more fruit to come. There is a light sulphur reduction which will soon blow off. Clean and pure with an energetic thread, correctly oaked behind. Good length to finish. Drink from 2024-2027

Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Houillères 2021
£300 per 6 bottle case in bond

Made from one old vine section and one recent planting. Not bottled and showing the barrel a little bit much at the moment, along with some reduction. There is a greater wealth of fruit here, fresh plum with a touch of citrus, and a little more flesh at the back, with the oak now completely tamed. Drink from 2024-2028

Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, Les Fairendes 2021
£390 per 6 bottle case in bond

Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, 90-93 points, October 2022

The vineyard was pulled out in 2014 and replanted in 2016, so very young vines. First three years of production was declassified, so 2021 is the first as premier cru. Sandy soil, frosts and dries out easily for young vines. 1100 litres made from 12 ouvrées. Let me translate that into 22 hl/ha. Pale lemon and lime colour. The bouquet seems a little stunted but the 2021 Fairendes fleshes out more on the palate, all white fruit, but not quite the length of a fine premier cru. Drink from 2025-2029

Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, En Cailleret 2021
£390 per 6 bottle case in bond

Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, 91-93 points, October 2022

A fine pale colour. A light stoniness but there is plenty of fruit too. Richer and deeper fruit on the attack, but Cailleret cannot escape its destiny and the stonier side of the fruit returns behind. Just enough flesh on the bones. Drink from 2026-2030

Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, La Romanée 2021
£435 per 6 bottle case in bond

Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, 92-95 points, October 2022

5 barrels made from one hectare. Another very pale colour. La Romanée delivers both the most tension and the most flesh on the nose. Still in the fresh white fruit vein. This shows its class on the palate but never fills out in explosive style. Builds slowly on the palate, ripe lemons to finish. Drink from 2026-2030

Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru, Les Pucelles 2021
£630 per 6 bottle case in bond

Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, 92-94 points, October 2022

Pale colour, fine energy, really chiselled, electric backbone, a burst of flavour and indeed some riper floral notes to finish, before some lemon scented oak at the very back. Possibly the faintest touch of something rather exotic to finish. Drink from 2026-2030

Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2021
£840 per 3 bottle case in bond

Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, 93-96 points, October 2022

Pale lemon colour, the bouquet takes some searching out, but then it arrives, clearly richer than the premiers crus and with a little more oak. At the moment the wood is a little prominent, one of the two barrels being new. The fruit will work out in the end but this may take some time to marry. Drink from 2028-2036

Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Chaumes, Rouge 2021
£210 per 6 bottle case in bond

Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, 90 points, October 2022

In bottle. A plot of one hectare half in each colour. A fine glowing crimson purple with an elegant and quite forceful fruit, red berries from cherry to raspberry. All destemmed. Charm on the palate right from the start with a balanced structure to finish. Drink from 2025-2028

Domaine Morey-Coffinet, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, Clos St-Jean Rouge 2021
£360 per 6 bottle case in bond

Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, 90-93 points, October 2022

A lovely plot to work says Marjolaine, providing an ethereal style of pinot. Certainly, there is nothing massive, even less brutish, about this. Instead, a charming light raspberry perfume, all in finesse. There is that tensile thread here, that speaks of high quality, in this fine and understated wine with impressive persistence. Approachable quite soon but with a good potential to last and improve. Drink from 2025-2030

As always with Burgundy releases, we are unable to sell leading Grand Cru and Premier Cru or wines from particularly sought-after domaines in isolation – we cannot buy them from the domaines that way ourselves and we are aware that demand is sure to outstrip supply. However, instead of running a complex system of allocations, we do aim to confirm requests as soon as we are able to do so or to highlight where we are unable to assist. To request a specific wine, please contact any member of the sales team on +44 (0) 20 3017 2299. You can also reach Simon Larkin MWRichard O'Mahony, and James Ceppi di Lecco by email.
