2018 Bordeaux Release Pricing

As ever, we will do our best to highlight wines where we feel confident in the quality and the value offered. This isn’t an exact science, but we won’t be shy in sharing the Atlas view. This year we will also flag the availability of a wider number of wines (below), as we acknowledge that some clients follow specific Châteaux and enjoy following each vintage. Equally, we fully understand if you have read something interesting by a critic that we haven’t opted to highlight ourselves. We have all, of course, appraised unfinished wines and have tasted them on different days and in different conditions. This year, the Atlas team made two separate visits to the region in order to form a far more comprehensive view – we hope our comments assist you in making your selections. Please contact Simon Larkin MW (Atlas' Managing Director) by clicking on the 'enquire button' below.

A blend of 85% Merlot, 10 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2018LaClotteoffers scented, floral notes that overlay a wonderfully juicy berry fruit on the nose, capturing notes of blackberry and loganberry. The palate is expansive, rich, but treads a very fine line – the copious fruit is balanced by a lively freshness this vintage. The typical juicy summer berry compote characters are once more on show, with subtle notes of cream and spice. Showing a fine density, admirable purity and a velvety textural impression, this adds to two impressive vintages for the estate (2017 and 2016) and is sure to win plaudits. The tannins are finely expressed and veiled by an impressive, deep fruit; this will age gracefully over the next two decades. Very impressive and fortunately still keenly priced. (SL).   A blend of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Quinault l’Enclos shows glossy, creamy dark and red berry fruits of real purity and good concentration. There is a sense of depth here that has not shown to this extent in previous vintages. Yet there is also an underlying sense of poise and energy with a fresh, almost crunchy fruit length and fine mineral tannins. The finish exhibits admirable tension and subtle yet vibrant fruit length. Really accomplished winemaking, with the long-term goals now becoming evident. (ROM) Drink: 2024-2040

£360 6x75   Enquire

A blend of 50% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. The 2018 Beychevelle continues this château’s fine run of vintages starting in 2016. Scented dark berry fruit on the nose, fresh and ripe.  The palate reveals a gradually mounting intensity, deep and layered with nothing forced. Indeed, this is fine, streamlined Beychevelle with freshness and poise, more exuberant than the 2016 but crucially it shows no signs of heat, there is a generous deep, juicy berry fruit with creamy swirls. A gravelly touch, to the notably spicy tannins asserts to the finish.  In line with the vintage, this is riper, bolder style of Beychevelle, but it loses none of the precision that is a hallmark of this impressive Château. (SL) Drink : 2024 – 2038.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, this vintage of GPL shows the classic hallmarks of this impressive Pauillac. The aromas reveal deep, ripe berry fruits, fragrant and lifted with a note of cassis. While the palate boasts a wealth of fresh berry fruit, the wine retains terrific precision and elegance. Glossy and sleek in texture, the evident structure is amply veiled in perfectly ripe fruit. Long, pure and stylish, there is plenty to like about the 2018 GPL, which shows a greater intensity on the mid palate than in some recent years. Very much a classic in the making.  Drink 2026 to 2043. (SL)

£525  6x75   Enquire
A blend of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc. The 2018 Canon reveals a floral lift to its cool ripe berry fruit on the nose, but what impresses most is the combination of richness allied to finesse. There is an almost understated feel about this wine, but don’t be fooled there is plenty of power and substance, but it is the wine’s poise that is flawless. Ample, juicy, fresh dark fruits are beautifully underscored by racy mineral notes rendering this Canon totally captivating. There is a really fine sense of cool ripeness here, coupled with sleek, finely expressed tannins and an overriding sense of harmony. Stylish and lithe, particularly in the vintage context, this will be a fascinating and hugely rewarding wine to follow. Drink 2025 – 2045. (SL)

A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc. A first release for Berliquet under the new ownership. The aromas reveal attractive rjuicy stone fruits and small dark berries. Again, this shows a fine freshness – that sense of cool ripeness – nothing overblown. There is a gently assertive mineral vein provides a tauter mineral impression, but overall it is the juicy, abundant fleshy-natured fruit that creates this wine’s appeal. Stylistically, it leans towards Canon in terms of purity and poise. A very attractive first vintage that will provide enjoyable drinking after a five to six years in bottle and could be a snip if sensibly priced. Drink : 2022 to 2030. (SL)

 £515 6x75  Enquire
A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Juicy dark fruits and hints of cassis on the nose. The 2018 Haut-Bailly shows in a bolder manner on the palate than the 2016 or 2015, but retains its poise. There is a soft, velvety, layered impression to the fruit, underscored by a bright acidity and very finely expressed tannins.  An almost minty edge to the berry fruits on the palate provides intrigue, as well as a distinct stony mineral complexity. While reflecting the vintage conditions, this 2018 still retains the hallmark signature; a beautifully rich, streamlined Haut-Bailly, where the wealth of fruit is balanced by a terrific sense of energy. Long, pure and stylish – there is so much to like about this 2018. (SL) 2026-2040.

Château Cos d'Estournel, 2ème Cru Classé, St. Estephe
(read our offer)
£890  6x75   Enquire
Deep and inky in the glass, the 2018 Cos is initially subdued aromatically on the nose, gradually revealing its deep, yet fragrant, berry fruit with air. The texture instantly impresses on the palate – seamless and sleek, with a fine mineral line of graphite running through lending direction and vigour. There is a stunning sense of precision, it is hard to find fault. Ample, juicy, dark berry and stone fruits are framed by a subtle toastiness – this shows such a fine sense of proportion and harmony. Taut, energetic and, while showing some of the generous depth of the vintage, it retains a classical feel. They have done it again – the 2018 is long, pure and refuses to fade. Unlike a number of wines in the vintage, the alcohol doesn’t even warrant a mention. This will prove a fascinating wine to follow over time. (SL) 2027-2050.

Aromas display fragrant, softly macerated red fruit with a lifted, floral touch. The palate comprises juicy red fruits with a succulent, sleek and creamy texture, alongside a fine, racy minerality. The layered finish is marked by a touch of leafiness and bright freshness. To say that I was stunned by this release is an understatement...it is a welcomed return to the elegance that can be achieved on this property. Drinking 2025-2045 (SL)
