Petrolo-ReSized

How about this for a notable difference? Take a good look at the two notes below and their respective reviews. Both wines have the same score from Antonio Galloni – in fact, Galatrona, an oft-championed wine by us all at Atlas, scored the same as Masseto. They were the joint top-scoring wines in the same review yesterday of new releases from coastal Tuscany on vinous.com, outscoring both Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

This exceptional Tuscan Merlot is often a screaming buy. When viewed alongside other great Tuscan Merlot like Masseto, Redigaffi from Tua Rita and Messorio from Le Macchiole, its price is nothing short of remarkable.

2020 Galatrona, Petrolo
Just released at £355 per 6 bottle case in bond
98 points, Antonio Galloni

The 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so impeccably woven together. Dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and spice build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The 2018 spent 18-20 months in French oak, about 25% new, with some larger barrels thrown into the mix. Magnificent. Drink : 2025-2040

And

2020 Masseto
Not yet released but 2019 was £3,150 per 6 bottle case in bond
98 points, Antonio Galloni

The 2020 Masseto is superb. Bright and vibrant in the glass, the 2020 offers up an exciting mix of dark-toned fruit, mocha, spice, leather, tobacco, cedar and a kiss of French oak. Lively acids and Franc aromatics lend vibrancy throughout. The Franc is so evident today. This is exceptionally polished and sophisticated, albeit a touch slender relative to most years. In 2020, Masseto is more finesse than power. Drink : 2027-2045

And just to hammer the point home: a simple comparison of the four leading Tuscan Merlot.

I haven’t yet had a chance to taste the 2020 vintage of Galatrona, but hope to in the near future. I have, however, followed this wine since the late 1990s vintages and there have been numerous highlights over the years – 2001, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2016, 2018 and 2019 are all noteworthy. Arguably, they are making finer wines than they were a decade ago. And all that while release pricing has remained remarkably fair!

If you are interested in reading some background on the estate, you can click here to read our previous offer – this way I am able to keep this offer a little more succinct than it might otherwise be!

So, there you have it; the newly-released 2020 Galatrona at £355 per 6 bottle case in bond.

Please let us know of your interest.

All the best,

Simon
