Domaine Sylvain Cathiard 2021

January 2023

Sebastien Cathiard related his losses in 2021 as being around 50% on balance across the board and this was the figure for the wines from Nuits-St Georges, Chambolle-Musigny and the Hautes-Cotes. The more dramatic loss was in his trio of Vosne Premiers Crus Reignots, Orveaux and Malconsorts, which saw yields down 70%. Smallcompensation but 2021 sees the release of a further new red wine. After the addition of a Gevrey-Chambertin and two single vineyard wines from the Hautes-Cotes de Nuits with the 2019 vintage, the 2021 vintage brings a third Hautes-Cotes de Nuits, this time from a number of parcels in and around the village of Villers-la-Faye. Overall Sebastien’s 2021s show a sense of harmony and restraint that is so compelling. Beautiful fruit clarity and seamless textures.

Not tasted due to tiny volumes.

Domaine Cathiard, Bourgogne Rouge 2021 SOLD OUT
£240 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

Clean, fresh berry fruit, juicy and pure with a gentle creamy touch on the palate. Finishes fresh and vibrant. Drink 2024-2028

Domaine Cathiard, Hautes-Cotes de Nuits Rouge 2021 SOLD OUT
£255 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

This is the first vintage of a third Hautes Cotes de Nuits for the Cathiard range. The fruit comes from a number of parcels in Villers-la-Faye, in the southern part of the Hautes-Cotes de Nuits, above Prémeaux-Prissey.

There is caressing fluidity to the palate, which displays clean red and blue fruit with a supple, subtle breadth. Builds gently and shows lovely balance. Drink 2024-2030

Domaine Cathiard, Hautes-Cotes de Nuits, Aux Chaumes 2021  SOLD OUT
£270 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

The Chaumes vineyard is next to Les Dames Huguette but above it and on the plateau though both share poor soils on free-draining limestone.

The nose displays clean, scented blue fruit with a floral touch. On the palate, this clean bright fruit quality comes through and spreads across the palate in juicy, lip-smacking style. Fresh, pure, clean, nicely balanced. Drink 2024-2032

Domaine Cathiard, Hautes-Cotes de Nuits, Les Dames Huguette 2021 SOLD OUT
£280 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

The Dames Huguette vineyard is on the slope of the Hautes Cotes on thin, white stone soils and this is reflected in the more linear, more tensile mineral nature. Here too the fruit is clean and pure on nose and palate. The white stone aspect is evident even on the nose but really shows on the finish. A fine Hautes-Cotes de Nuits with a finish of good length and fruit clarity underpinned by a mineral energy. Drink 2025-2032

Domaine Cathiard, Gevrey-Chambertin 2021 SOLD OUT
£450 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

From 40-year-old vines on clay-based soils lower down the slope.

Blue and black fruit are evident on the nose and show the deeper fruit style of Gevrey. The palate is quite complete, rounded but not heavy at all. The finish shows good structure with evident clay influence subtly expressed at the end in a certain density to the mineral drive. Drink 2026-2035

Domaine Cathiard, Vosne-Romanée 2021 SOLD OUT
£510 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

As always at this stage, there is a warm, toasted note on the nose here with the healthy fruit emerging from behind. The palate is flowing and graceful with a silky touch. A gentle but persistent mineral tension comes in at the end with clean, bright, healthy fruit returning too. Lovely texture. Drink 2026-2035

Domaine Cathiard, Chambolle-Musigny, Clos de l'Orme 2021 SOLD OUT
£540 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

Beautifully scented cherry fruit on the nose leads into a sweet cherry fruit attack. Overridingly elegant and tensile. The finish is marked by a caressing, delicate fruit. The mineral persistence of this terroir is evident too but so well woven to the wine. Drink 2026-2032

Domaine Cathiard, Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru, Aux Thorey 2021 SOLD OUT
£970 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

Elegant and flowing, this Thorey shows clean blue and red fruit on the nose and palate. There is a gently grippy white stone touch at the end. Very refined and with wonderful balance and harmony. Drink 2027-2036

Domaine Cathiard, Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru, Aux Murgers 2021 SOLD OUT
£1,050 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

Murgers has a tendency to produce particularly small berries and this is evident here in the darker fruit profile and a touch of dark chocolate. The palate displays a healthy core of cherry fruit with a cherry stone touch bringing structure and direction to an otherwise more mouth-filling style. Again there is a sense of poise and harmony to this 2021 from Cathiard. Drink 2028-2036

Domaine Cathiard, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, Aux Reignots 2021 SOLD OUT
£1,950 per 6 bottle case in bond

Not tasted due to tiny volumes.

Domaine Cathiard, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, En Orveaux 2021 SOLD OUT
£1,950 per 6 bottle case in bond

Not tasted due to tiny volumes.

Domaine Cathiard, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, Les Suchots 2021 SOLD OUT
£2,250 per 6 bottle case in bond

Not tasted due to tiny volumes.

Domaine Cathiard, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru, Aux Malconsorts 2021 SOLD OUT
£2,850 per 6 bottle case in bond

Richard O’Mahony, Atlas Fine Wines, November 2022

Evidently greater concentration here as we step up to the Malconsorts. Even on the nose there is a presence allied to a richness of fresh, scented fruit. The palate shows the juicy fruit style of the vintage, saline and mouth-watering, before the fine tannins and mineral intensity make themselves known on a finish of noteworthy persistence. Beautiful. But, sadly, so little this year. Drink 2026-2036

Domaine Cathiard, Romanée Saint-Vivant Grand Cru 2021 SOLD OUT
£3,600 per 6 bottle case in bond

Not tasted due to tiny volumes.

As always with Burgundy releases, we are unable to sell leading Grand Cru and Premier Cru or wines from particularly sought-after domaines in isolation – we cannot buy them from the domaines that way ourselves and we are aware that demand is sure to outstrip supply. However, instead of running a complex system of allocations, we do aim to confirm requests as soon as we are able to do so or to highlight where we are unable to assist. To request a specific wine, please contact any member of the sales team on +44 (0) 20 3017 2299. You can also reach Simon Larkin MWRichard O'Mahony, and James Ceppi di Lecco by email.
