Domaine Morey-Coffinet 2019

January 2021

Thibault Morey and his father Michel have transformed Domaine Morey-Coffinet in a few short years. The domaine is not an old one in itself, but was created in the late 1970s by the union of Michel Morey and Fabienne Coffinet, the daughter herself of Cecile Pillot – so a rollcall of Chassagne icons is at its core. And it remains decidedly Chassagne to this day, with all of its domaine holdings lying within the Chassagne border, the one exception being its Puligny Pucelles. They are certified organic since 2018 and have been following biodynamic principles for four years, which, as we have commented frequently elsewhere, demonstrates a clear commitment to the long-term health and sustainability of the vineyard and a mindset focused on integrity and respect. Thibault is a calm, thoughtful winemaker, who talks knowledgeably and insightfully about not just his own holdings, but about Burgundy as a whole. Not so much revolution but evolution here, and wines of beautiful harmony and transparency.

2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, En Caillerets, Domaine Morey-Coffinet
£290 per 6 bottle case in bond

Vines planted between 1985 and 1990. Aging is in a mixture of 228 litre and 350 litre barrels.
93-94 points, Steen Ohman, winehog.org, March 2020

Very lively, with a fennel impression infused with vivid citrus notes. As always, airy and vivacious. This is a brilliant expression of Caillerets which evokes delightful memories of the 2010 version from Ramonet. Very Fine. Drink 2023-2029

2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, Romanée, Domaine Morey-Coffinet
£290 per 6 bottle case in bond

Vines planted in 1957.  Aging in a mixture of 228 litre and 350 litre barrels.
93 -94 points, Steen Ohman, winehog.org, March 2020

La Romanée is from older vines, but is not very expressive at the moment, being currently a bit closed with a hint of reduction. There is, however, fine, vivid freshness, with the acidic backbone giving the wine delightful structure. A sleeper currently, but greatness is awaiting… Very Fine. Drink 2023-2029

2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru, Les Combettes, Maison Morey-Coffinet
£375 per 6 bottle case in bond

93-94 points, Steen Ohman, winehog.org, March 2020

The Puligny Combettes is a rich, vivid wine; generous and racy. Delightful minerality is supported by the lively acidity and citrus notes. Very detailed for such a generous wine; vivacious and quite emotional. Fine+ Drink 2023-2029

2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru, Les Pucelles, Domaine Morey-Coffinet
£375 per 6 bottle case in bond

93-94 points, Steen Ohman, winehog.org, March 2020

The Pucelles is racy and refined, showing the beautiful potential of this fine vineyard. The freshness of the vintage and the citrus/orange hint do play very well with the sensual minerality of Pucelles. A delightful wine, and a vin d’émotion. Very Fine+ Drink 2023-2029

2019 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine Morey-Coffinet
£1,200 per 6 bottle case in bond

From vines entirely on the Chassagne side. Aged in 400 litre and 228 litre barrels.
93-94 points, Steen Ohman, winehog.org, March 2020

The Batard is a truly outstanding wine with delightful intensity – a very refined Batard. Make no mistake: It has all the power you would ever want, but the vivacious style and structure of the 2019 vintage really lift this wine to a different and very interesting level. Absolutely a vin d’émotion… Outstanding+ Drink 2024-2034

As always with Burgundy releases, we are unable to sell leading Grand Cru and Premier Cru or wines from particularly sought-after domaines in isolation – we cannot buy them from the domaines that way ourselves and we are aware that demand is sure to outstrip supply. However, instead of running a complex system of allocations, we do aim to confirm requests as soon as we are able to do so or to highlight where we are unable to assist. To request a specific wine, please contact any member of the sales team on +44 (0) 20 3017 2299. You can also reach Simon Larkin MWRichard O'Mahony, and James Ceppi di Lecco by email.
