Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste has just been released onto the market this afternoon having received a very strong review from Neal Martin in which he describes it as a ‘brilliant GPL’.

Unfortunately, I didn’t taste the 2020, but I think the price is fair and I can forgive the Borie family a small increase as Grand-Puy-Lacoste has remained one of the great values of Pauillac – it has never been a victim of over-ambitious release pricing.

This is certainly a vintage that I look forward to tasting once bottled as the notes below are compelling.

The release pricing the last five vintages is listed below for your reference (source: Liv-ex, quoted in bond)

2020       £304 per 6 bottle case in bond

2019       £270 per 6 bottle case in bond
2018       £336 per 6 bottle case in bond
2017       £324 per 6 bottle case in bond
2016       £367 per 6 bottle case in bond

'GPL' has a deserved reputation for refinement and judging by the notes below, the 2020 showcased the best attributes of the vintage without any of the excesses. This is surely one of the most consistent of Pauillac Châteaux and I know is well-followed by many of our clients.

95-97 points, Neal Martin, vinous.com

The 2020 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a very refined, almost understated bouquet at first, but it opens in glorious fashion to offer precise blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, crushed stone and wild mint, gaining intensity at its own pace. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-grained tannins, a keen thread of acidity, layers of intense black fruit and quite a spicy, vibrant and certainly persistent finish. This is a brilliant GPL from the Borie family. Drink 2027-2055

93-96 points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com
The 2020 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is an explosive, vibrant Pauillac. The bouquet alone is captivating. Lavender, grilled herbs, menthol, chocolate and crème de cassis all race out of the glass. A wine of vertical structure and precision, the 2020 is a total stunner. It simply dazzles from start to finish. Drink 2032-2050

92-94 points, Michael Schuster, The World of Fine Wine
Black-red; a particularly refined and subtle “cassis-Cabernet” nose; medium-full, fresh to crisp in acidity, very fine in gently firm tannin; long, fresh, elegant, even, ripe red fruit in flavor, backed by subtle mineral impressions, long across the palate, refreshing, restrained, and with very fine tannin textures, of modest intensity and with excellent, subtly gravelly red-fruited length. Beautifully understated by comparison with many in this often somewhat “strong” vintage. A complete, restrained, classy Pauillac. Drink 2026 – 2040+

All the best,
