“They seem to go from strength to strength and are getting closer to their goal with some of their wines achieving world-class status…one of the most exciting new projects not only in Gredos, but in the whole of Spain!” – Luis Gutiérrez in 2014

“These are among the most inspiring wines produced in Spain today.” – Luis Gutiérrez in 2020

Here are just a couple of the many endorsements of Comando G by Luis Gutiérrez. Comando G was established in 2008 by Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia, who set out on a mission to express the unique terroir of the rugged Gredos region in Spain through the old vine Garnacha that had long been neglected. Over this short time period, it is safe to say that they have built a loyal following for their wines, which are undoubtedly some of the most compelling wines in Spain.

Comando G, at just 15 years old, is already viewed as a training ground for the further wave of young, dynamic producers that continue to establish themselves. Daniel comes from a family of winemakers, being part of the Jimenez-Landi success story of Mentrida. Fernando caught the winemaking bug working for the revered Raul Perez of Bierzo and subsequently Telmo Rodriguez, a name almost synonymous with the resurgence of high quality Spanish wine. Good CVs, both.

The jewel in Comando G’s Crown is the Rumbo al Norte, produced in tiny volumes and once likened by Luis Gutiérrez to “some of the wines from Domaine Leroy in Burgundy with some Rayas thrown in”. High praise indeed. Though it has to be said that the whole stable of wines from Comando G are subject to scrupulous, considered, gentle handling, both in the vineyard and in the winery. La Bruja de Rozas, offered here, is their ‘village level’ Garnacha. Though this is no simple wine – La Bruja de Rozas is sourced from several vineyards in Las Rozas de Puerto Real which lie at around 900 metres above sea level, with vine age ranging from 45-65 years. As with all Comando G wines, vineyards are hand harvested and the Bruja de Rozas undergoes a 9 month maturation in large oak vats.

The Comando G wines are defined by an effortless elegance, finessed, perfumed and with a delicate balance of fruit character and fine tannin structure; they are truly unique, terroir expressive wines, that I would urge you to try if you are not already one of their loyal followers.

I am very pleased to be able to offer the 2020 La Bruja de Rozas, Comando G at £125 per 6 bottle case in bond. As I am yet to taste this vintage of La Bruja, I include Luis Gutiérrez’ note and score below:

2020 La Bruja de Rozas, Comando G

The first red to be bottled and sold is the 2020 La Bruja de Rozas, which feels a little more reductive this year. The grapes were picked before the torrential rains, so the wine shows a little riper than the wines that were picked after (the single vineyards). It's flinty and with a note of struck match, with good ripeness at 14.5% alcohol. This is always aromatic and floral, pale and surprisingly ethereal and expressive, a very pleasant and surprising wine that tends to please most people. This is the wine that I buy in volume, as it's a superb introduction to the Comando G portfolio and style at a very good price. Even though the nose is never short of spectacular, to me the signature here is the super fine grainy tannins from the decomposed granite soils. This goes back to the freshness of 2016 and 2018, perhaps a little rounder and less herbal, somewhere in between the two vintages. 43,175 bottles were filled in late August and early September 2021. Drink 2022-2028

Best wishes,
