2018 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, 5ème Cru Classé, Pauillac

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste has released this morning. In the 2018 vintage it came as no surprise that this estate excelled. 'GPL' has a deserved reputation for refinement and the 2018 showcased the best attributes of the vintage without any of the excesses; it is a strong recommendation from us this vintage.

My note below, as well as Antonio Galloni's note.

2018 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste, 5ème Cru Classé, Pauillac
£336 per 6 bottle case in bond

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot, this vintage of GPL shows the classic hallmarks of this impressive Pauillac. The aromas reveal deep, ripe berry fruits, fragrant and lifted with a note of cassis. While the palate boasts a wealth of fresh berry fruit, the wine retains terrific precision and elegance. Glossy and sleek in texture, the evident structure is amply veiled in perfectly ripe fruit. Long, pure and stylish, there is plenty to like about the 2018 GPL, which shows a greater intensity on the mid palate than in some recent years. Very much a classic in the making.  Drink 2026 to 2043. (SL)

A wine of precision, energy and nuance, the 2018 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fabulous. Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet red berry fruit grace this exquisite, nuanced Pauillac. Medium in body, understated and classy, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is one of the highlights of the year. In a word: impeccable. The 2018 is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Merlot from yields of 40 hectoliters per hectare.
