2016 Château d'Esclans and 2016 Domaine de la Mordorée

Published 20th April 2017

As a wine-style, rosé is all too often dismissed, yet there are some immensely well-made wines offering great finesse and purity.

Each year we look to highlight one or two such examples to our clients and each year, our criteria remains simple: quality and intrigue coupled with a good price. In the interest of keeping this offer brief, the two wines we include here are easily a notch above the rest. These are elegant, refined and poised examples of impressive quality.
2016 Château d'Esclans, Rock Angel, Côtes de Provence
£90 per 6 bottle case in bond (£20.60 per bottle including duty/VAT)
We have backed the wines of Château d'Esclans from the Côtes de Provence for a few years now, and the quality emerging from this estate continues to impress. It is one thing to make good wine in any given vintage, but to do so consistently is the mark of scrupulous care in the vineyard and great understanding in the cellars.  Formerly known eponymously as 'Château d'Esclans', the Rock Angel is a dry rosé (composed of Grenache and Rolle, or Vermentino) offering subtle notes of red fruits and blood-orange. The palate is well concentrated yet without any sense of heaviness. There is a purity and an elegance throughout with an exceptionally long and refreshing finish. Drink 2017-2020.
2016 Domaine de la Mordorée,  ‘La Dame Rousse’, Tavel
£70 per 6 bottle case in bond (£16.60 per bottle including duty/VAT)
We have offered a previous vintage of this estate's 'Reine des Bois' rosé. However, following a tasting of their 2016 production, we felt that the 2016 La Dame Rousse was of superior quality.  Having encountered this producer some time ago, it has been a pleasure to witness the family's growing reputation.  La Dame Rousse (an intricate blend of Grenache with Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Bourboulenc and Clairette) is a wine of surprising structure, capable of aging for 5+ years. Bright and mineral, this wine has superb aromas of redcurrant, raspberry and orange, as well as floral notes adding to its charm and complexity.  The palate marries richness with energy and finishes with pure, focused freshness. Drink 2017-2022.
Both of these fine rosé will be available for delivery from mid-May. Please let us know of your interest at your earliest opportunity.
