Burgundy 2012 Vintage Report

Burgundy 2014 - Domaine Darviot Perrin

Domaine Darviot Perrin

Domaine Darviot-Perrin has been dedicated to producing excellent quality Burgundy since its inception in 1989.  Although based in Monthélie in the Côte de Beaune, the majority of their wines are produced from holdings in Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet and Volnay. Since the very first commercial bottling 25 years ago, a keen focus on producing impeccable fruit in the vineyards has seen the Domaine attract global acclaim.  Today, the property spans 11 hectares and is managed by husband-and-wife team Didier and Genevèive Darviot, now assisted by their daughter Alix.  Genevèive‘s father, Pierre Perrin, passed down his extensive knowledge of winemaking and vineyards to Didier and the Domaine’s first vintage was realised through the Darviot-Perrin partnership, a partnership which continues in a different guise to this day.  The focus with Domaine Darviot-Perrin is on producing the best possible fruit and minimal intervention in the cellar to create beautifully focussed and pure wines.  We are pleased to be offering what we consider to be the very best of the Darviot-Perrin portfolio, namely their two exceptional Meursault Premier Cru and the Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru ‘Blanchots Dessus’ from a prized strip of vineyard close to Le Montrachet itself.

Domaine Darviot-Perrin, Meursault-Genevrières 1er Cru 2014
The Premier Cru of Meursault-Genevrières sits just to the north of Les Perrières Premier Cru vineyard and boasts a similar mineral-laden terroir with a favourable south/south-easterly aspect. Accordingly, these two Premier Crus from Darviot-Perrin are similar, both being crystalline in their purity and weighted with elegant citrus fruit. Their Genevrières possesses a slightly more approachable nature, but otherwise the impressive aromas on the nose and the bright, energetic palate are hallmarks of this impeccably-run domaine. There is a fragrant floral character to the 2014, in addition to the pure lemon fruit aromas. A touch of honeysuckle pre-empts the underlying palate richness, which is beautifully balanced by the firm, yet, refreshing finish. Just 200 cases made. Drink 2018-2024

Domaine Darviot-Perrin, Meursault-Perrières 1er Cru 2014
Few dispute that Les Perrières is the best Premier Cru in Meursault. The Darviot family own vines here which were planted before the Second World War. The quality of fruit from these old vines adds firm structure, fine fruit intensity and the ability to mature over many years. We were incredibly impressed by the Darviot-Perrin’s exemplary Les Perrières in the 2008 vintage, which showed fine purity and concentration. The 2014 shows aromas of lime and lemon with white pepper complexity on the nose. This reveals the same potent citrus character and tension that are apparent in the 2013, freshening the palate and ensuring that this will age beautifully over the mid-term. This vintage promises a fine evolution in bottle, and will surely develop considerable complexity over time. 125 cases made on average. Drink 2018-2025

Domaine Darviot-Perrin, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, Blanchots Dessus 2014
As with the Meursault Perrières, this 1.2 hectare Premier Cru towers over its peers in terms of quality and, out of the many Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Crus, it is the one most frequently considered for promotion to Grand Cru. Indeed, it lies adjacent to three of the best Grand Crus vineyards of Le Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet and Les Criots Grands Crus. The family make just 150 cases from the fruit from their vines, planted in 1965. The 2014 shows a slightly richer, acacia honey complexity on the palate compared to the Perrières, allied to a firm structure and naturally high acidity. Very intense lemon zest and the traditional steely, persistent mineral character last well on the finish along with the delicate almond and spice of French oak ageing. Impeccable. Drink 2018-2025.
