NEW RELEASE : Bordeaux 2019 en primeur - Château Haut-Bailly

June 2020

This morning 2019 Château Haut-Bailly has released at a very compelling price, particularly given the quality of this vintage that has received unanimous praise. We are pleased to offer here at £420 per 6 bottle case in bond.

I tasted the Grand Vin and the second wine as we have worked closely with the Château for many years and they were kind enough to send through samples. It is an outstanding wine – please see my full note below. I have made no secret of the fact that I am a huge fan of Haut-Bailly in so many vintages. I find it a fascinating wine to follow over time; it is capable of ageing over the long-term in great years and yet the style of the wine never seems to preclude relatively early enjoyment. There is a purity to the wines of Haut-Bailly, an elegance and a complexity that I find completely captivating, and it is fair to say that they have enjoyed an enviable run of form this last decade.

First of all, this is what I was referring to when I commented on unanimous praise :

Neal Martin                       96-98 points
Antonio Galloni                 95-97 points
Jane Anson                      97 points
Lisa Perrotti-Brown          97-99 points
Jeb Dunnuck                    96-98 points
James Suckling                98-99 points…unsurprising perhaps but included for completeness! 😊

And here is the release pricing for recent vintages (source: Liv-ex com, quoted in bond).

2019       £420 per 6
2018       £522 per 6
2017       £444 per 6
2016       £498 per 6
2015       £360 per 6

Please see my note as well as Neal Martin’s below.

2019 Château Haut-Bailly, Cru Classé, Pessac-Leognan
£420 per 6 bottle case in bond

A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.
The aromatics show fine ripe berry fruit, fresh and gently scented – a real mix of soft fruits. Showing the generous ripeness of a warmer vintage without ever losing poise, this is an impeccably made wine with layers of deep berry fruit and a definite mineral undertow. Texturally this is hugely impressive with fine-grained tannins and a wealth of fruit. It finishes long and resonant – another fine Haut-Bailly to join an ever-growing list of great examples. (SL) 2027-2045.

96-98 points, Neal Martin, vinous.com
The 2019 Haut-Bailly was picked 23 September to 10 October. After 10-15 minutes in the glass the wine gradually unfurls to reveal beautiful red berry fruit, crushed stone, wilted rose petals and faint hints of blueberry. The palate is quite brilliantly balanced, the tannins extremely fine and framing the slightly earthy black fruit laced with salt. Though Véronique Sanders suggests that it bears a semblance to the 2009 with more depth, I cannot see that verisimilitude. To me, it is a less flamboyant and more terroir expressive Haut-Bailly that has an effortless allure and a sense of sophistication. Wonderful. 2024-2055.

Please let us know of your interest and do please note that it may be necessary to limit orders to one 6 bottle case per client given anticipated demand.

All the best,

Simon
